Herbert Jones and LSU forward Trendon Watford were teammates on the AAU team Alabama Challenge. Watford's hometown is Birmingham, Alabama.

"He’s my best friend, I grew up with him, (we) played on the same AAU team, so I know him pretty well," Jones said of Watford in 2020. "We talk all the time, almost every day talked to him yesterday, (but) we don’t really talk about the basketball-side of thing. We keep it on the friendship-side."

Watford is two years behind Jones in school.

When they were AAU teammates, Watford wore No. 1 and Jones wore No. 20, according to AAU Stats. Jones now wears No. 1 for Alabama, and Watford wears No. 2 for LSU.

"It would’ve been cool to have him here, but he made his decision and he’s been doing well down there," Jones said in 2020 of wanting Watford to come to Alabama

In 2017, both were named Alabama Sports Writers Association boys basketball players of the year with Jones honored in Class 4A and Watford recognized in Class 7A.
